Data approximation in AI refers to simplifying data or models to make computation tractable while preserving essential patterns. This could involve using a smaller sample of data (sampling) to estimate results that would be obtained on the full dataset, or using a reduced complexity model to approximate a more complex one. Examples include clustering a large dataset into prototypes, using low-rank matrix approximations, or employing teacher-student model distillation (where a simpler “student” network approximates a larger “teacher” network’s behavior). Data approximation trades off some accuracy for speed or memory efficiency. It is useful when dealing with very large datasets or complex models that are impractical to handle directly, as long as the approximation error is acceptable for the task at hand.
